As one of Ireland’s most sacred mountains. Similar to Croagh Patrick and Mount Brandon. Cnoc na Tobar is a part  of twelve pilgrim trails of Ireland.

It has been a sacred pilgrim site since prehistoric and medieval times.  To state its importance, it is the site of the festival of Lughnasa, the harvest festival. Great fireslit by people. They would sing, dance and praise the gods for a great harvest. But since medieval times it has being used as part of the Christian pilgrims routes.

It stands at 690m, a “stand-alone” mountain north of Cahersiveen and rising sheer out of Dingle Bay. One of the most impressive mountains in the Iveragh peninsula.  The climbs it self is a trail  which is clearly marked. In front of you iconic Skellig rocks gradually appears in the horizon as you walk.

Historical facts

In 1885, the Cahersiveen parish priest , Canon Brosnan, organised the erection of stations of the cross on the route from St Fursey’s Well to the summit of Cnoc an Tobar.  before you take on the summit, there is a well. dedicated to St. Fursey or St. Fursa, the sixth-century saint. It  is known for its healing mineral properties, especially for eye problems.

the true summit is not the cross build by the Catholic church.  You will have continued to the northwest. Go straight over a turf /bog. There is a small cairn build by pre-Christians and this is the summit.
